A Part That Fails at the Worst Possible Moments

Few component failures are as inconveniently timed as this one — it has a habit of stranding drivers mid-journey rather than giving a clean warning while the car is safely parked. Knowing the early signs buys valuable time to get it sorted before that happens.

Before you buy: fuel pump specifications vary by engine size and fuel type, and petrol/diesel versions are never interchangeable. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

OEM Part Numbers

The 1.2 PureTech turbo petrol engine uses direct injection, meaning the fuel system includes both a lower-pressure in-tank pump and a separate high-pressure pump mounted on the engine — these are two distinct parts with different symptoms when they fail. Diesel BlueHDi variants use an entirely different fuel system architecture.

What It Does

The fuel pump draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the engine at the pressure required for proper combustion. Almost all modern versions sit inside the fuel tank itself, submerged in fuel, which is partly why access for replacement is more involved than the part's small size might suggest.

Fitment & Compatibility

Fuel pump specifications differ between petrol and diesel versions of the C4, and again across different generations generations due to differing fuel delivery pressures. Always confirm the exact part number for your specific engine before ordering.

Common Faults

Symptoms of Failure

Whining noise from the fuel tank area — often the earliest sign, especially noticeable when the tank is low on fuel.
Engine sputtering at high speed — can indicate the pump struggling to maintain pressure under load, worse on motorways or hills.
Difficulty starting — a weakening pump may struggle to build enough initial pressure, causing longer cranking times.
Sudden loss of power or stalling — a more advanced failure, often happening without warning and sometimes intermittently at first.

DIY Replacement Difficulty

This is a moderate-to-difficult DIY job on most versions, since the pump usually sits inside the fuel tank and access often requires either dropping the tank or removing a panel beneath the rear seats, depending on the generation. Working around a full or nearly full fuel tank adds both weight and a fire-safety consideration that makes this a job many home mechanics prefer to leave to a garage. Expect 2–4 hours for an experienced home mechanic with the right access, or roughly 1.5–2 hours of labour at a garage.

OEM vs. Aftermarket

OEM fuel pumps are generally the safer choice given how directly this part affects engine reliability and how inconvenient a repeat failure would be. Reputable aftermarket brands with genuine OEM-equivalent specifications are a reasonable alternative, but budget unbranded pumps are a common source of early failure — not a part worth cutting corners on.
